After many lessons learned, here is my first apron. First off, the fabric was too see-through, so I should have lined it or picked a thicker fabric. Second, store-bought patterns have quite a learning curve. I had to re-learn a lot of sewing language in making this pattern, and I definitely made mistakes. And third, the picture on the pattern looked better than this turned out. I don’t know why the “skirt” is higher in the back than the front, but that wasn’t my mistake – that was the pattern. But overall, I think it turned out well for my third or fourth project since I started. It seems like every item I make, it turns out to teach me more about sewing, and no item I make ends up perfect. I wonder if that is because I am a beginner or if no sewing venture ends up perfect. What do you think?

Yeah, I’ve held off on doing those types of patterns and stuck with Amy Butler and the Sew Everything Workshop because they are so much clearer and easier to understand than other patterns! The first pattern I did that wasn’t from one of them was my dad’s robe and I was glad I had waited because I understood intent and technique a little better than I would have if I had started with a pattern like that.
Each item you make will teach you more about sewing and you’ll get better because of it. The first couple bags I made, I struggled with here and there. Now I can make it through a pattern without much trouble. . . I think it’s just part of the learning curve! It seems to be a quick learning curve though – keep doing patterns and you’ll be a pro in no time!
